Recycling On the Go
…Recipient of MORA‘s 2008 Outstanding Achievement for a Community Recycling Program!
St. Louis Earth Day’s Recycling On the Go is the region’s first wide-reaching event recycling program. Our goal is to reduce the negative environmental impact of events and festivals by reducing and recycling a portion of the waste they generate. We offer a full range of services from managing event recycling to full event greening assessments and action plans. See our ROG calendar to find out where you can find recycling at upcoming events.
Visit our volunteer opportunities page to find out how you can help. Individuals and groups welcome!

In 2011…
- Our service was available on 71 event days and experienced by over 1 million event-goers at 35 large area events!
- Our recycling bins were utilized at 23 community events, charity functions and celebrations through our Do-It-Yourself recycling loan program.
We diverted the following materials from area landfills, most of which were collected in just the summer and fall seasons:
- We diverted 43 tons of mixed recyclables, organic waste and compostable food service items and spent cooking oil! That’s an average of over a ton of materials diverted from the landfill at each of our 2011 season’s events!
Since the beginning of the program in 2007, approximately 153 tons of materials have been diverted from area landfills (primarily recycling, but this figure includes compost and spent oil). Recycling On the Go has enhanced the waste management of 190 events (442 event days). Many of these events occur annually, and so ROG has become an established part of organizers’ planning and patrons’ experience. Over the past five seasons, the program has exposed approximately 3.7 million people to recycling when away from home. Through these efforts, people have come to expect access to recycling containers when they attend an event.
In 2006, St. Louis Earth Day was awarded grant funding to kick off Recycling On the Go, the region’s first large-scale event recycling program. St. Louis Earth Day is still the only non-profit environmental organization in the region to provide large and small-scale event recycling services. Because of funding from the St. Louis-Jefferson Solid Waste Management District, ROG has successfully brought recycling and compost services to events in St. Louis City and County that would otherwise have no waste diversion services.
