2012 Green Strum Band Scramble Rules & Information

The Green Strum Band Scramble contest is a creative way to introduce musicians and audiences to the concept of sustainability within the arts. The contest is a platform for music lovers to meet, have a whole lot of fun, and entertain some festival goers in the process. We want to keep it simple and enjoyable so there are only a few rules that should cover pretty much everything. Click here to read more about The Green Strum Project at the St. Louis Earth Day Festival.

Online registration is closed, but no worries–come by the Green Strum Project’s tent by 11:45am to participate.

Here’s how it works:

  • There is no entry fee for the Green Strum Band Scramble contest.
  • Interested individuals may pre-register online (see link above) or on the morning of the festival at the Green Strum tent.
  • Participation is limited to the first 50 registrants.
  • Registration deadline is 11:45am on the day of the festival.
  • Registrant’s names will be drawn from a hat to form bands.
  • The names will be drawn at 1pm on the Cafe Stage.
  • Participants need to be present at the drawing if at all possible. Your new fellow band members will appreciate it!
  • After the drawing of names, the newly-formed bands will have the afternoon to construct at least one instrument, decide on a band name and to arrange and rehearse one song for the contest that evening.
  • The newly-formed bands will have access to raw materials, tools, and guidance at the Green Strum tent.
  • Each band must construct and feature at least one homemade instrument constructed on site on the day of the festival.
  • Any non-amplified instrument or noise maker may be used during the performance.
  • The contest will be held on the Earth Day Cafe Stage starting at 4pm.
  • Sound will be provided.
  • Each performance group will have identical stage set ups (microphones, monitors, etc.).

Bands will be judged by a panel of local, sustainable, musical celebrity judges on the following qualities:

  • Enviornmental Impact-(we’re going to have some fun with this)
  • Musicality
  • Band Name
  • Audience Response
  • Creativity
  • Use of conventional acoustic instruments is not required, but will likely serve to enhance the group’s score in the musicality category.
  • Songs and/or tunes need not be original works, but this will likely serve to enhance the group’s score in the creativity category.
  • Vocals (in the form of singing or spoken word) are not required but are encouraged.
  • Song content must be family-friendly, but otherwise; anything goes.
  • Time Limit: Each group will perform one song lasting no longer than 4 minutes. If your group’s performance exceeds the given time limit you may be subject to heavy penalization by the judges.
  • Scores will be tallied and prizes distributed immediately following the contest.

1st Place winners will receive tickets to LouFest.  |  Other prizes include tickets to KDHX shows.

Contest results will be posted on The Green Strum Project home page and the St. Louis Earth Day website for all the world to see.
