PRESS RELEASE: Earth Day Recycling Extravaganza Collection Event

2011 Earth Day Cafe

The following food and beverage vendors will be located in the Earth Day Café area and throughout the Festival for your digestive enjoyment. Schnucks will be in the Earth Day Cafe, showcasing products from its Full Circle organic and natural foods line. Schlafly Beer will be serving old and new favorites like their Organic Rye Bock. Also available will be fresh squeezed lemonade, locally crafted wine and a variety of iced coffee and tea.

No trans-fat, highly processed or high fructose corn syrup menu items are allowed! The St. Louis Earth Day Festival bans high-fructose corn syrup and other highly processed or fried foods typically found at events. All serving containers and utensils are recyclable or compostable, and you won’t find (HFCS) soda or bottled water. Plan carefully so you have space to try a little something from all of our 2011 food & beverage vendors:

Peace Garden

The Peace Garden is a space welcoming you to pause and reflect, pray, meditate or connect with others. We share this space as a way to offer our highest intentions to live in harmony and peace with all the Earth.

All Species Parade

12noon |  meet at the Main Stage
Join in a St. Louis Earth Day tradition by representing your favorite species (or combination of species!) in this parade around the Muny grounds of Forest Park as we kick off the event. The Honorable Mayor Francis Slay will kick off the Parade at 12noon as we celebrate the interdependence and value of all species–plants, insects, fish, birds, etc. Costumes, props, pets and instruments are highly encouraged! Click here to read more about the history of the All Species Parade.

Eco-Art Activities

10am to 11am |  East side of the Muny covered walkway, by entrance to Performance Pavilion
Get your recycled props ready for the All Species Parade with The Green Strum Project and the Teachers’ Recycle CenterImpish Grin Face Art will also be on site providing free face-painting until 11am to get you ready for the Parade.

11am to 6pm |  Teachers’ Recycle Center van, (same location as described above)
Visit the Teachers’ Recycle Center van where children and adults (and everyone in between) can create a one-of-a-kind little box to remind them to Reduce, Reuse, Recycle.

Green Strum Project Workshops

10am, 1:30pm |  Green Strum Project tent is located near the Info Booth, across from the Muny ticket box office
Explore the connections between sustainability and music with Kelly and Ryan of the Green Strum Project at this year’s Festival. The Green Strum Project was formed by Kelly Wells and Ryan Spearman to explore the connections between sustainability and the arts in St. Louis while raising awareness of the importance of healthy, local economy through events, educational workshops and musical performances. Educational Activities

Education is a key component of the Earth Day Festival. Environmental Education Activity booths are scattered throughout the Festival neighborhoods, according to their topic. These activity booths are noted in the neighborhood listing with an asterisk (*). Booths include exhibits, demonstrations, and hands-on activities covering a wide range of topics. Balanced Body: Yoga!

Try yoga for free in the Balanced Body: Relaxation pavilion, located off the Western Muny walkway, behind the Earth Day Cafe. If you can, please bring a mat or blanket with you. The floor is wooden but there will not be extra mats.

Pedal for the Planet

Registration: 9am to 10:30am |  meet at the Missouri History Museum
Grab your two wheels and explore some of the natural ecosystems of Forest Park on your own or join the naturalist-led group tour at 9:30am. This feature is free and open to the public, registration is 9-10:30am. The ride is approximately 6 miles, flat with some hills. Trailnet will offer helmet fittings and FREE helmets to the first 50 youth in need. A route map is provided at registration. SAG (support and gear) support ends at 11:30 a.m.

Recycling Extravaganza

9am to 3pm |  St. Louis Community College parking lot, Forest Park campus
The Earth Day Recycling Extravaganza will be accepting your hard-to-recycle items from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on the St. Louis Community College Forest Park campus parking lot, off Oakland Ave. All are invited to load up their cars, trucks or bicycle baskets with any (or all) of the items that will be collected by one of a dozen partnering non-profit organizations or recycling companies. Click here to read more and to view a list of items that will be accepted.

Shuttle Service

10:30am to 6:30pm |  St. Louis Community College parking lot, Forest Park campus
Even if you aren’t dropping off spring cleaning debris, you are welcome to leave your car at STLCC and catch a ride to the Festival via a free shuttle service, provided by the St. Louis Lambert International Airport biodiesel bus and Super Park compressed natural gas (CNG) bus. Shuttles leaving STLCC every 15 minutes on the hour.

2011 Booth Listing

A themed-neighborhood layout makes it easy for visitors to navigate the Festival and experience all the celebration has to offer. The theme of this year’s Festival is “Be the Change.” We encourage everyone to use the event as an opportunity to explore areas in your life where you can make a change that will be better for you, better for your community and better for the environment. The Festival is a great way to learn about local businesses, envi-ronmentally friendly products and services and celebrate with your neighbors. Click on the Festival neighborhoods below to find a booth listing for that area.
